Quaternary Reelfoot Fault Deformation in the Obion River Valley, Tennessee, USA

چکیده
Blind reverse faults are challenging to detect, and earthquake records can be elusive because deep fault slip does not break the surface along readily recognized scarps. The blind Reelfoot in New Madrid seismic zone central United States has been subject of extensive prior investigation; however, extent at southern portion remains unconstrained. In this study, we use lidar map terraces lacustrine landforms Obion River valley investigate apparent broad folding resulting from on buried fault. We compare remote mapping results with three auger boreholes ?24 ka Finley terrace interpret warping as due tectonic stratigraphic thickening. combine our historical coseismic lake formation that indicate deformation dammed 1812 CE earthquake. Older (deposited least 35–55 ka) record progressive fold scarps ?1, ?2, ?8 m high indicating a long earthquakes predating existing paleoseismic record. Broad, distributed above into is consistent active tip reaches Our analyses entire length (?70 km) capable rupture more longer scenarios.

Responses of Bats to Forest Fragmentation in the Mississippi River Alluvial Valley, Arkansas, USA
Intense conversion of bottomland hardwood forests to rice and soybeans in the Mississippi River Valley of Arkansas has restricted the remaining forest to isolated fragments. Habitat fragmentation has proven to be detrimental to population sustainability of several species, and is the subject of intense study with often species and latitude specific responses. We compared both coarse land area c...
متن کاملChannelization and floodplain forests: Impacts of accelerated sedimentation and valley plug formation on floodplain forests of the Middle Fork Forked Deer River, Tennessee, USA
We evaluated the severe degradation of floodplain habitats resulting from channelization and concomitant excessive coarse sedimentation on the Middle Fork Forked Deer River in west Tennessee from 2000 to 2003. Land use practices have resulted in excessive sediment in the tributaries and river system eventually resulting in sand deposition on the floodplain, increased overbank flooding, a rise i...
متن کاملPreceramic occupations in the orinoco river valley.
Two sites in the Orinoco Valley containing preceramic from excavated contexts are described. Radiocarbon dating and stylistic comparisons indicate that the northern tropical lowlands were inhabited at the onset of the Holocene, suggesting a time depth of 9000 years before the present for tropical forest-savanna adaptations in northern South America.
متن کاملChemical composition of fine particles in the Tennessee Valley region.
Fine particles in the atmosphere have elicited new national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) because of their potential role in health effects and visibility-reducing haze. Since April 1997, Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has measured fine particles (PM2.5) in the Tennessee Valley region using prototype Federal Reference Method (FRM) samplers, and results indicate that the new NAAQS annu...
متن کاملQuaternary volcanism in Tabas and the role of the Nayband great fault
Introduction: Quaternary basalts are one of the last signs of magmatism in Iran, some of which are related to deep fractures and active faults in the Quaternary. Quaternary basalts of Tabas are very important due to their high expansion and location in eastern Iran, and are located 140 km south east of Tabas city and according to the proposed divisions are part of the Lut zone. The aim of this...
